I was reading an article about finding my path in life. The article talked about that feeling of your life being in “neutral” instead of “drive”, and urged the reader to look at his/her last party: the funeral. Depressing? You bet! But very helpful.
In thinking about your funeral, consider who will be there, what they will say, and how they will think about you. Will they say you were good at your job? Will your children praise you for working long hours or coaching them at sports and helping with homework?
Make your personal vision statement by jotting things in a notebook and meditating on them. You can write random thoughts or questions. What is important to you? What will happen if you take Path A rather than Path B? Does it really matter which direction you go? Why are you accepting this job—for the money, the prestige, or because it’s something you really like/want to do?
One question that struck me was Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Wow. The article had been written three years before I read it, and I thought about what I’d wanted in 2004 and where I’d ended up in 2007. Real food for thought. How did I get here? Why did I choose one path over another? Can I go back to the crossroads and make a different choice?
Now is the time to make your personal vision statement. See where you may end up if you stay on your current path. See where you may end up if you take a different path.
Now is the time to make the changes you want to see down the line.
