Did you know that colors affect people emotionally, psychologically and physically? Here are some things to keep in mind when you plan to paint or decorate your home or office.
Blue has a calming effect. In some people, it creates a feeling of peace and trust.
Red increases the heart rate, raises the blood pressure, and even creates rapid breathing. It can also stimulate the appetite, which is why many restaurants use red in their décor.
Likewise yellow, which is cheerful and draws attention. (“Golden Arches” sound familiar?)
Green refreshes, nurtures and balances. Because it is associated with nature, it naturally complements most interior colors. Dark green is also associated with high economic status. “Institutional” green is a calming color, whereas pink can cause people to become aggressive. In one study, a holding cell in a jail was changed from institutional green to pink, and within a short time, the prisoners were more aggressive and violent.
HGTV has an interesting program on selecting colors. A “color wheel” is made with items the person likes. For example, one couple wanted an Asian décor, so the color wheel contained yellow flowers and silk, blue China porcelain, red shoes, green wasabe, orange Japanese lanterns, etc. By selecting items in the colors you like, it is easier to visualize how your room will appear. By making your own color wheel with flowers, seashells, semi-precious stones and other items that appeal to you, you will see how they complement or oppose each other. This is a very interesting way of learning how colors work together.
