Romances Latinos, Rusty Crutcher, Emerald Green Sound
Productions, 2015, CD, Available on Amazon.com, $16.82.
Hot,
sensual, and oh, so smooth! Rusty Crutcher’s tenor saxophone performs (as the
CD cover says) “the world’s most beautiful Latin love songs written by the
greatest South and Central American songwriters and composers of the twentieth
century.” So true! Even the well-known favorite, What a Difference a Day Makes, becomes an enticing Latin-jazz love
song. The guitar work is exotic, enticing. The accordion adds an ephemeral
touch here and there throughout the CD.
Crutcher’s music is reminiscent of Gato
Barbieri, which is a tribute to both exceptional musicians. You’re in the land
of palm trees, fronds bobbing on a warm breeze, a cold drink within arm’s
reach. At other times—listening to Here’s
To Life (Gracias a la Vida), for example—you’re transported to a night
under Latin skies, stars twinkling above as you watch white-capped waves kiss
the shore.
Relaxing, soothing, yet sensual and exciting.
As I listened I thought, “If I had a cafĂ© in any Latin locale, this is the
music I would play all day and all night.” That’s the flavor. Rich, exotic,
incredibly entertaining.
