MAGIC SQUARE

By Marta Estrada

Magic squares are talismans. They can be made up of any number of divisions. The sum of the numbers in each row and the sum of the numbers in each column are the same. Magic squares are conducted using numerology (or arithmancy, as used in the Harry Potter books). Numbers have power, so using numbers in a magic square makes a powerful talisman. I encourage you to read about numbers/numerology/arithmancy to learn more about their individual vibrations, energies and powers.

Dr. John Dee is known to have produced magic squares called Angelic Tablets that were used 400 years later by the Esoteric Order of the Golden Dawn. One has to wonder if they would have lasted that long if they didn’t work.

There are various types of magic squares, and each is created depending on its use. The method below is for a simple four-by-four square and comes from Richard Webster’s Amulets & Talismans for Beginners, an absolutely wonderful book published by Llewellyn (ISBN 0-7387-0504-7). I highly recommend it for all levels and as an indispensable reference book.

Think of the columns down as A, B, C, D. To construct your magic square, start with your month, day and year of birth. In this example, we will use March 4, 1978, or 03/04/78.

Start by putting your birth date in the first three squares:

The number in the fourth square (D) depends on the purpose of your magic square (wealth, love, etc.). For this example, this number is the sum of your birth date. 03 (month) + 04 (day) + 1978 (year). Once these numbers are added, the sum is reduced to a single digit. The only exceptions are the “magic” numbers of 11 and 22, but you can learn more about them in numerology texts.

                 03
                 04
          + 1978
             1985 reduced to: 1+ 9 + 8 + 5 = 23 = 2 + 3 = 5

The formula for the remaining squares is addition and subtraction, referring to A-B-C-D above:

D+3

The result:

As the sum of each row across is the same as the sum of each column down, you can easily double-check your math.

Magic squares can be done on parchment and carried with you. Some people have them done in precious metals and wear them as jewelry.
